Social Problems in the nineteenth century compared to social problems today.
In the nineteenth century the people faced many social problems such as population, health and slavery. In the 21st century we have a lot of social issues as well. Some are similar to the 19th century and some are rather different, in the 19th century they weren’t concerned about bullying, the suicide rates, alcohol and drug abuse, abortion or teen pregnancy.
In the nineteenth century Britain was trying to increase population. In 1810 the population was growing quickly. In 1813 the plage caused the death of over 4,000 Maltese, in 1830 the small pox killed 756 Maltese, in 1837 a cholera epidemic killed 4,253. They started to emigrate people from Europe to raise population. The first census was taken in 1842 the population at that time was 113,864. In 1851 the population increased, it raised to 123,494 which is an increase of 9630. Another census was taken in 1871 where there was an increase of 16,506 which made the population 140,000. There was a census also taken in 1902 where the population was 200,000. Between 1842 and 1902 (sixty years) the population grew by 86,106. The 200,000 we had in 1902 doesn’t really compare to the 34 million we have today. We have a huge population and not enough homes, water and food for everyone in the world.
The people in the 1800's had terrible problems with heath. The common cold would wipeout thousands. Disease would totally wipeout areas that had the disease. The environment the people where in wasn’t very clean. They didn’t bathe often and didn’t have very good waste management. The worked in the dirt and with animals that carried different disease as well. They didn’t have a health care system and only the extremely wealthy could afford doctors but even the doctors weren’t very advanced and precise. Health is and isn’t one of our social problems; we do have great technology and doctors but there are many diseases we do not have cures for (ex. most types of cancer). We are a very clean society and are immune to many different viruses.
Slavery was pretty common in north America but slavery was huge in the south. White people where racist and thought they were better than anyone with darker skin. A large majority of slaves were black. Most of the people had slaves so they didn’t really think it was that wrong but you can imagine how the slaves felt. Now slavery is illegal so its not a big problem in today’s society.
We do have a lot of social issues in our society. All lot of problems deal with opinion of people. We have also problems with in our society today. Over Population- not having no food, water housing etc. Pollution - damaging the world we live in, war- many deaths and massive damages for bad reasons, stupidity - lack of education obesity/disease, habit destruction - destroying nature to make room for more people and Species Extinction- causing diversity of life to diminish. We also have extreme problems with bullying and suicide.
Social problems. We’ve had social problems, have social problems and will always deal with social problems in our society.
